Born sometime during the mid 19th century, he was a legendary sailor, laborer, bartender, security guard, and an official lifeguard. He was probably best known for teaching thousands of children and adults how to swim. He was also one of the first black African inhabitants of Vancouver British Columbia. He passed away in 1922 in the city of Vancouver, and his funeral procession was a record breaking event, with thousands of people attending. Today there is still a large monument to him within the city, and his name is used in connection with a branch of the Vancouver Public Library, and a popular downtown restaurant.
