Born with the name Vissarion Tikas in 1913, he would eventually go on to become the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece from the year 1974 until his death in 1998. Before that, one of his first positions was as the secretary within the Holy Synod Church of Greece. From there he was later elected to the rank of Metropolitan Bishop of Arta by 1958. From that position he was elected to hold the title of Archbishop for Athens and all of Greece, replacing his predecessor Archbishop Ieronymos I. As acting prelate of the Church of Greece, he frequently visited the Orthodox Patriarchates of Belgrade, Moscow, Sofia, Antioch, and Constantinople. While serving as church leader, he also swore into office six total presidents, and a long list of Prime Ministers.
