My good friend Mehmet from Ankara Turkey sent me the following question. Was the Hekhal a Tabernacle and temple in Jerusalem? The Hekhal, also spelled Haichal or Hechal, was the sanctuary or holy place within the Tabernacle and First Temple of Jerusalem. It is often referred to as the Holy of Holies by both Jews and Christians, and it contained many sacred objects, such as the Ark of the Covenant, a golden altar, Table of the Showbread, and a golden Menorah. During Isaiah's vision of the Seraphim angels within the Torah or Old Testament, Isaiah claims that the Seraphim song shook the foundation of the Temple. It is this holy Temple that he is referring to, named after it's builder, Solomon's Temple. This temple was eventually raided and destroyed by the ancient Babylonians in 597 BCE. Due to the sensitivity of the Temple Mount location today, no excavation work has been done on the site, and thus no trace of this Temple has been found.
