My old friend Antoinette from Istanbul Turkey sent me the following question. Was a Hagia Sophia Seraphim mosaic uncovered? The answer is yes, experts discovered a new Seraphim mosaic in 2009, which had been hidden underneath plaster and metal masking for over 170 years. The Seraphim mosaic itself is roughly one and a half by one meters in size, and was thought to have been covered up during restoration work conducted by the renown Swiss architect Gaspare Fossati. The mosaic itself was originally created sometime during the 14th century, and is extremely well preserved hundreds of years later. With regard to the Hagia Sophia itself, it was originally built by the mighty Byzantine emperor Justinian, in the 6th century. The Ottoman Turks conquered the city in 1453, and then converted the enormous basilica in to a mosque. From 1934 onward, the building has served as a museum, with many renovations taking place since then.
