The story itself focuses on Adam and Eve's sin, as well as the great rebellion in Heaven lead by the Prince of Darkness Lucifer. What is interesting about this poem however, and caused much controversy over the centuries, is Milton's literary depiction of God. It's still not clear whether or not God in the poem is a just and good God, or whether he is an evil and mischievous character. I suppose it's up to individual interpretation.
